Her earlier work in Korea examined traditional architecture and craft histories, using cultural heritage as a framework to understand how identity can be defined thorugh shared traditions. Building on this foundation, her current practice expands this perspective by shifting the focus from collective cultural identity to the individual, investigating how personal experiences and environments continousouly shape one’s sense of self.
By embracing the unpredictability of chemical reactions between glass and oxides, she creates unique surface textures that reveal layered processes of internalisation. These stratified surfaces act as metaphors for the accumulation of experiences over time, reflecting how identity is formed through ongoing interactions with one’s surroundings and others.
She is currently studying MA Ceramics & Glass at the Royal College of Art (2025/26). She completed her BFA and MFA in Ceramics and Glass at Hongik University, Seoul, and has since exhibited in Korea.
이희주 (b.1996)는 런던과 서울을 기반으로 가마 성형 기법을 통해 유리 작업을 진행한다. 그녀의 작업은 상호 연결된 현대 사회 속에서 개인과 문화를 어떻게 구분하고 이해할 수 있는지에 대한 질문에서 출발한다.
한국에서의 작업에서는 이러한 질문에 대한 하나의 답으로 전통을 매개로 한 문화적 정체성을 탐구하였다. 전통 건축과 공예의 구조와 형태를 바탕으로, 문화가 공유된 기준 속에서 어떻게 형성되고 인식되는지를 시각화하였다.
이러한 관점을 확장하여, 현재는 문화에서 개인으로 시선을 이동시켜 각자의 환경과 경험 속에서 축적되는 시간과 그 내면화의 과정을 탐구하고 있다.
홍익대학교 도예 유리과에서 학사 및 석사를 졸업하고, 현재 영국 왕립예술학교(Royal College of Art) MA Ceramics & Glass 프로그램에 재학 중이다.
